Admission Brochure for International Applicants to Master’s Programs at the Central Conservatory of Music in 2016

I. Eligibility for Application
1. Applicants must have obtained an undergraduate graduation certificate and a Bachelor’s degree.
2. Applicants must offer letters of recommendation from two scholars holding an academic title equivalent to or higher than associate professor.
3. Applicants’ health conditions must be in accordance with the provisions of the medical standards.
4. Applicants must have obtained a certificate for Level 3 of Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK).
II. Application, Examination
(I)Application category: self-financed full-time graduate students.
(II)Fill out the application form: candidates can only fill in one desired specialty in our conservatory. Details regarding specialties and advisors can be found in Appendix I.
(III) Examination subjects
1. First exams: professional majors;
2. Reexamination: professional basic courses
See Appendix II for details on examination requirements for professional subjects. However, the piano test as specified in Item 4 is cancelled. See Appendix III and IV for bibliography and examination syllabus. The examinations will be held in our conservatory (Beijing) only.
(IV) As examination reform pilots for international candidates, the Institute of Music Education, all the specialties of the Orchestral Instruments Department and the composition specialty of the Composition Department will adopt the examination method of "professional major examination and interview" (the exam methods for other professional specialties will remain the same as before).
The interview requirements for the specialties taken as examination reform pilots for international candidates are as follows.
1. Institute of Music Education: The candidates’ mastery of sight-singing and ear-training, choral conducting, piano proficiency, composition skill and theory will be assessed.
2. All the specialties of the Orchestral Instruments Department: (1) Candidates introduce their own learning experiences; (2) Candidates elaborate on professional knowledge they have acquired; (3) Candidates come up with their expectations for their study in China if enrolled.
3. Specialty of composing of the Composition Department: (1) Candidates introduce their own learning experiences; (2) Candidates explain how they understand the current internationally renowned composers; (3) Candidates come up with their expectations for their study in China if enrolled; (4) Candidates answer questions concerning their written exams or works they submitted.
Note: The examination time is October and December in 2015; We won’t offer Japanese and Russian language courses.
III. Admission and Enrollment
A comprehensive evaluation of candidate’s registration materials and examination results will be conducted before our conservatory admit the best candidates. The admission notice will be sent to the qualified applicants by post in June 2016. Admission procedures should be completed as specified in the admission notice.
Newly admitted students must register with our conservatory in the early September of 2016, specific time to be seen in the “admission notice”. After the registration, our conservatory will have a medical review of the newly admitted students. Their status of the admission of those whose health conditions are not eligible will be revoked.
IV. Study and Degree Conferral
1. The duration of study for full-time Master degrees is three years.
2. Candidates applying for Master’s Programs in the Institute of Music Education will be appointed by the institute to practice in fields outside of Beijing for one academic year.
3. Applicants shall receive a master's degree certificate and diploma if they pass the required courses and obtain the required credits, if their degree work, concert and thesis are passed and are in compliance with the “Regulations Concerning Academic Degrees of the People’s Republic of China”.
V. Tuition and Accommodation
The tuition is aimed to be 43000 Yuan/person/year (if the annual tuition fee standards approved by the relevant departments of Beijing change, the new standards will be carried out). The yearly tuition must be paid during the registration period at the beginning of each academic year.
