Admission Brochure for International Applicants to Doctoral Programs at the Central Conservatory of Music in 2015

I. Application

(I) Eligibility for Application

1. Applicants must have a degree or graduation certificate equivalent to a master’s degree in China.

2. Applicants should have a good moral character and their health conditions must be in accordance with the provisions of the medical standards.

3. Applicants must offer letters of recommendation from two scholars holding an academic title equivalent to or higher than associate professor. (Applicants need to visit the website of our conservatory to download the standard format and the letters should have the experts’ signature).

(II) Application category: self-financed full-time graduate students.

(III) Application time: February and March in 2015

(IV) Application place: Come to the International Students’ Office and the Graduate Admissions Office of our conservatory after online application.

(V) Application formality

   Applicants must submit the following materials to our conservatory. All pieces of papers and works submitted must be the original work of the applicants. Otherwise, the applicants’ examination and admission qualification will be canceled.

1. First, fill out the application form in the International Students’ Office. Then with the "registration notice" issued by the International Students’ Office, submit the online application form to the Graduate Admissions Office for examination. (Be sure to sign the signature, otherwise the form will be invalid; Detailed information on specialty catalogue, admissions tutor, and exam subjects can be found in “Doctoral Appendix I”).

2. Applicants’ own ID card (have the original examined and submit a copy).

3. Submit the Master's graduation certificate and the certificate of a Master’s degree for examination. Graduation certificates and certificates of degrees from foreign educational institutions should be accompanied by verification from the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (have the original examined and submit a copy); The graduating student may submit the Student ID card (have the original examined and submit a copy) and an official document issued by the educational administrative department of the degree-conferring unit indicating the research area and student ID number as an enrolled graduating student. In that case, the original certificate of Master’s degree must be submitted for examination before admission; Submit the graduate studies transcripts, Master's thesis, experts’ reviews and the resolution of the thesis defense committee. Those at the same educational level as the regular graduate need to submit the certificate of a Bachelor’s degree (have the original examined and submit a copy).

4. Submit a certificate for Level 3 of Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) and the physical examination report.

5. Applicants must offer letters of recommendation from two experts in this discipline holding an academic title equivalent to or higher than associate professor. (Applicants need to visit the website of our conservatory to download the standard format and the letters should have the experts’ signature).

6. Candidates for all areas of musicology should submit: a) their own master’s degree thesis (graduating students should submit their master’s degree thesis that is as complete as possible); b) a report on the current research situation of the area they apply for and their views of the development prospects of the subject; c) the research plan at the Ph.D. phase (including research questions and research programs); d) two academic papers written by the candidates independently in the research area of not less than 5000 words. The two papers should represent the highest academic level of the candidates, of which at least one is expected to have been published in an official academic journal (See “Note 2” below on requirements for journals); or published works with professional academic depth as an alternative (the total number of papers and works is two).

Candidates can’t take the subsequent exams unless the materials submitted above have passed the censors.

Note 1: The papers or works submitted shall conform to academic conventions and academic ethics. In case of plagiarism, once discovered, candidates will have the admission right denied, academic status cancelled or degree granted by the Central Conservatory of Music revoked respectively, according to the different stages of the examinees at the time of discovery.

Note 2: The papers submitted by the applicants are required to have been published in the selected journals by the four journal selection system (excluding conference proceedings, documents issued by publishing organizations indicating a paper is expected to be published are invalid): a) “the Chinese core journals” by Peking University library. b) “Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI) Original Periodicals” and its extended edition by Nanjing University. C) “Core journals in Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences” by the Document Information Center at Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. d) “RCCSE Core academic journals of China” and its expanded version by China Center for scientific evaluation and research, Wuhan University.

7. Candidates applying for the area of temperament should submit:

(1) three professional papers written by the candidates independently. One of the three papers is expected to have been published in an official academic journal in the research area. (There should be not less than 5000 words. A copy of the copyright page and catalogue must be attached. Documents indicating the paper is expected to be adopted aren’t recognized. Those adopting the pseudonym need to submit relevant journals as supporting documents);

(2) Master degree graduates should submit their master’s thesis. Graduating students whose graduation thesis has not yet been completed should submit the master’s thesis topic, the directory, and an abridged version of the master’s thesis of about 10000 words, or selected chapters of the same weight;

(3) Those at the same educational level as the regular graduate and from interdisciplinary disciplines should submit papers as required in (1), wherein at least one paper has the equivalent academic level of a master’s student in the applied area.

(4) Candidates can’t take the subsequent exams unless the materials submitted above have been approved by the advisor.

Candidates for all areas of composing theory and technology should submit three professional papers written independently by the candidates. One of the three papers is expected to have been published in an openly distributed academic journal in the research area. (A copy of the journal catalogue must be attached. Documents indicating the paper is expected to be adopted aren’t recognized. Those adopting the pseudonym need to submit relevant journals for proof); Besides, candidates applying for such specialties as polyphony, harmony and music analysis must submit an independently composed chamber work with at least the following three instruments: trio,quartet and quintet; Candidates applying for the specialty of orchestration must submit an independently composed orchestral music (Double tube above). Those at the same educational level as the regular graduate should submit at least one paper at the equivalent academic level of a master’s student in the applied area. (There should be about 10000 words in one paper.)

Candidates for the area of composing should submit three independently composed works. Symphony orchestra work (Three tube band or three tube above) is a must. The other two works may include chamber music, vocal music, folk music, electronic music and so on.

★Candidates applying for all areas of composing and composing theory and technology can’t take the exams unless their submitted materials have been approved by the expert group organized by the Composition Department.

10. Candidates applying for the area of electronic music composition shall submit an academic paper on electronic music upon application; five pieces of academic electronic music works (Audio file CD and score, at least two pieces of works should last over ten minutes), including two or three pieces of pure electronic musical works, and two or three pieces of mixed works combining real musical instruments (or voice / or multimedia) with electronic music.

11. Candidates applying for the area of electronic music technology theory shall submit three academic papers (or other research products) on academic electronic music upon application. At least one academic paper should have more than 30000 words. Submit one academic electronic music work (Audio file CD).

12. Candidates applying for the area of music education should submit their own master’s thesis upon application; a teaching practice summary report; a copy of their own music teaching video (1 session). This area excludes those from interdisciplinary disciplines and at the same educational level as the regular graduate.

13. Specialty of symphony, opera conductor:

   The specialty is accessible both at home and abroad, mainly to young conductors of the state art troupes and the professional bands nationwide, outstanding graduates of conducting departments and professional conducting faculties of music colleges. The applicants should hold a Master’s degree in conducting generally. Especially outstanding young conductors can apply as candidates at the same educational level as the regular graduate.

   The admissions examinations for the specialty of symphony, opera conductor adopt the system of “candidates apply to be assessed and screened by the Conducting Department”. Candidates are required to provide a concert DVD within the past two years and related materials that can represent their professional level (personal resume, artistic experience, track volume, academic achievement, learning desire and two letters of recommendation from experts). Candidates can’t take the formal examination unless they have been selected by professors of the conducting department.

(VI) Application and examination fee:

   Candidates must pay the application and examination fee of 800 Yuan and be responsible for all the expenses of themselves, according to regulations. The fee of 800 Yuan is non-refundable for those who don’t take the exam after application.

(VII) Fill out the application form:

   candidates can only fill in one desired specialty in our conservatory. (Details regarding specialties can be found in “Doctoral Appendix I”).

II. Examination

(I) Examination method

1. The Musicology Department adopts the doctoral student enrollment application verification system. Candidates can’t take other exams unless the papers and subject reports they submitted have been approved. Exam subjects can be seen in detail in “Doctoral Appendix I”. For the oral examination, candidates are required to make a PPT format of the submitted “report on the current research situation of the discipline and the views of the development prospects of the discipline” and “the research plan”. Candidates should present for no more than 15 minutes before answering the questions raised by the experts in charge of the oral examination. The time for the oral examination is 30-50 minutes per person.

2. Examination methods for other departments: written exam and oral exam, exam subjects to be seen in detail in “Doctoral Appendix I”(no exam for foreign languages).

3. Those from other research areas including the different research areas within the Composition Department must take extra exams. The passing score for extra exams are all 60. Those who fail shall not take the other exams.

(II) Examination time and place:

   online application in February and March of 2015; exams in April, 2015. The examinations will all be held at the Central Conservatory of Music. Specific time can be seen in the time arrangement of 2015 doctoral enrollment.

III. Admission

   A comprehensive evaluation of candidate’s registration materials and examination results will be conducted before our conservatory admit the best candidates. The admission notice will be sent to the qualified applicants by post in June 2015. Admission procedures should be completed as specified in the admission notice.

IV. Enrollment 

   Newly admitted students must register with our conservatory in the early September of 2015, specific time to be seen in the “admission notice”. After the registration, our conservatory will have a medical review of the newly admitted students. Their status of the admission of those whose health conditions are not eligible will be revoked.

    The duration of study for full-time Ph.D. degrees is three years; The tuition is aimed to be 48000 Yuan/person/year (if the annual tuition fee standards approved by the relevant departments of Beijing change, the new standards will be carried out). The yearly tuition must be paid during the registration period of each academic year.

V. Degree

   Applicants shall receive a doctor's degree certificate if they pass the required courses, if their degree work, concert and dissertation are passed and are in compliance with the “Regulations Concerning Academic Degrees of the People’s Republic of China”.
